Colbert Takes on the FEC

By Jeremy Miller

Isn’t it ironic how the funny man is the one laughing all the way to the bank on an issue that is no laughing matter? Stephen Colbert’s creation of a “super PAC” is both great comedy and educates Americans on the absurdity of our campaign finance system in a post-Citizens United world. As Colbert sees it, this is a part of the American dream.

“Anyone, no matter who they are, if they are determined, if they are willing to work hard enough, someday they could grow up to create a legal entity which could then receive unlimited corporate funds, which could be used to influence our elections.”

On Friday, CREW’s intrepid media man made his way down to Federal Election Commission (FEC) headquarters to catch Colbert as he delivered a request for an advisory opinion on his political action committee, “Colbert Super PAC.” Check it out.

We’ve long said the FEC is a joke, but sometimes it takes the jester to point out who the clowns really are.
