CREW Offers Ethics Guidance to Hill Staff
On January 9th, CREW's executive director Melanie Sloan gave an off-the-record discussion guiding Congressional staffers through the maze of congressional rules to help avoid the greatest ethical and legal pitfalls. Ms. Sloan focused on Congressional gift rules, travel rules, conflicts of interest and personal financial disclosure forms.
The Congressional ethics committees have mandatory training seminars, but it doesn’t take much to avoid the committees’ scrutiny. Staying out of the sights of ethics watchdogs and investigative journalists, on the other hand, can be trickier... as can understanding the permutations of the increasingly complicated ethics rules.
Every day, CREW talks to reporters about ethics abuses on Capitol Hill. Staffers who attended learned what journalists ask us, the issues we focus on, and the conduct that might strike staffers as insignificant, but may rile up constituents and reporters back home.
