CREW Calls for Ethics Investigation of Rep. Michael Grimm for Threatening Reporter

Rep. Michael Grimm (R-NY)

Washington, D.C. — Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington (CREW) today filed a complaint with the Office of Congressional Ethics (OCE) against Rep. Michael Grimm (R-NY) for conduct that reflects discreditably upon the House after the congressman threatened a reporter with physical violence.

“Rep. Grimm's behavior last night was completely unacceptable and reflects discreditably on the House of Representatives. Unfortunately, his total meltdown is in keeping with the congressman’s refusal to come clean about the allegations surrounding his shady fundraising practices. Perhaps the pressure of the ongoing federal investigation is finally starting to get to him,” CREW Executive Director Melanie Sloan said.

Following last night's State of the Union address, Rep. Grimm reacted aggressively to NY1 reporter Michael Scotto when asked about the federal investigation into alleged campaign finance violations. The congressman was caught on camera verbally assaulting Scotto, threatening to throw him off a balcony and "break [him] in half."

The congressman's behavior violates House Rule 23, which requires all members of the House to conduct themselves "at all times in a manner that reflects creditably on the House." By physically threatening a reporter for asking questions in the public interest, Rep. Grimm clearly damaged the institution's credibility.

Rep. Grimm was named one of CREW's Most Corrupt in 2011, 2012, and 2013.

The congressman is the target of a federal probe into whether a fundraiser helped him raise illegal campaign funds in 2010 in exchange for the candidate’s promise to help obtain the fundraiser a green card. The donors solicited by the fundraiser included several businessmen involved in the pornography industry and frequently broke campaign contribution limits in the process. Grimm also violated House rules by using official resources for fundraising purposes.
