CREW v. U.S. Department of Justice (Tobacco Settlement)
After the Department of Justice (DOJ) requested penalties in its lawsuits against the tobacco industry for significantly less than what it had previously been demanding, Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington (CREW) filed a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request with the DOJ for the records that lead up to that decision. When the DOJ was not forthcoming with the records, CREW filed suit to force their disclosure.
