CREW Files Opposition to Goverment's 2nd Extension Request in DHS/Archivist Lawsuit

January 7, 2007

8 Jan 2007 // Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington (CREW) filed its opposition to the government's second request for an extension in CREW's lawsuit against the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and Allen Weinstein, Archivist of the United States.

CREW filed the lawsuit against DHS and Weinstein on November 9, 2006 after DHS failed to respond to CREW's October 4, 2006 Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request that the Secret Service provide all records of visits that a list of specified religious leaders made to the White House and the residence of the vice president.

The government has already been given 60 days in which to respond to CREW's complaint, but claims it needs more time to coordinate with the White House. CREW is concerned that this may be an effort to collude to avoid disclosure of White House visitor records.
