The Bush/Cheney White House does not want you to know who meets with them. They've gone to great lengths to make sure you don't

The first paragraph of the latest AP article sums it up:

A newly disclosed effort to keep Vice President Dick Cheney's visitor records secret is the latest White House push to make sure the public does not learn who has been meeting with top officials in the Bush administration.

The Bush administration has changed the rules over record-keeping to prevent access to visitor records.  They've usurped the role of the Secret Service, which is covered by the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA).  Instead, Bush and Cheney claim visitor records are under their jurisdiction, thus exempt from FOIA.  CREW is not accepting that determination, hence our lawsuits.   Also, as AP notes, this controversy took off following the Jack Abramoff scandal:

The administration is seeking dismissal of two lawsuits by liberal watchdog group Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington that demand Secret Service visitor logs.

In trying to get the cases thrown out, the Justice Department has filed documents in court outlining a behind-the-scenes debate over whether Secret Service records are subject to public disclosure. The discussions date back at least to the administration of President Bush's father and involve the Justice Department and the National Archives as well as the White House and the Secret Service.

The government's court filings show that the Bush White House focused on the issue in the months before Election Day 2004.

Discussions moved into high gear when the Jack Abramoff lobbying scandal prompted news organizations and private groups to demand that the administration turn over Secret Service records of visitors to the White House complex and the vice president's residence.

Why is the Bush administration hiding visitors?   Clearly, they've got something to hide.

Not about Abramoff but more about oil and profits for Cheney.

Here is a thought:

I saw an email from Waxman's website of an email exchange from Jack Abramoff to Kevin Ring dated April 27, 2001 on followup contacts. One of the contacts was mentioned was Dick Cheney on the email. The subject is about Qatar.

Here is a bit of information to connect:

During the summer of 2001, Congressman Dana Rohrabacher (who was also close friends to Abramoff) made a trip to Qatar that was paid for by the Islamic Institute and the Government of Qatar, according to Rohrabacher’s financial disclosure forms. While in Qatar, Rohrabacher, Grover Norquist, and Khaled Saffuri met with Taliban Foreign Minister Mullah Wakil Ahmed Muttawakil. Wakil reportedly asked for help in increasing the amount of foreign aid sent by the United States to Afghanistan, apparently in exchange for U.S. oil company UNOCAL being allowed to construct of an oil pipeline through Afghanistan. UNOCAL-->Afghanistan-->oil pipeline-->KBR Halliburton---> Cheney.

They found a better way

Wahabi biserkers--->Iraq--->$500 billion--->KBR Halliburton--->Cheney/Bushco.

The Afghan Wahabis got shoved into the ditch.

Afghanistan a diversion to Iraq

Good point.

Afghanistan was shoved aside, Iraq was the eye of the prize. The names on those logs were certainly connections to Dick Cheney's plans to profit in oil and gov't contracts from Iraq.

Oil bonanza

Don't forget the crude oil that disappeared from Iraq-
$40 billion worth.

May not just be Abramoff!

The debate over who controls the records of who is visiting the VP became more heated after it was reported a Russian vodka company sponsored a party at the VP's residence last year (and Cheney did what for that Russian company?), and after it became known (reported by San Diego writers) that Cunningham's coconspirator # 1, Brent Wilkes and conspirator # 2, Mitchell Wade have links to Cheney dating back to the early nineties.

The visitor log scandal also became a bigger deal after it was made public either Wilkes/Wade (forget which of the 2--they're equally dirty!) supplied the VP's office with office equipment and computers around July of 2002 and that the Government Reform Committee is investigating that contract. It is of particular interest because its dollar amount was the exact same cost as the Dukester yacht bought by Wade/Wilkes for Cunningham the following month.

Finally, the Administration began digging in its heels even harder re the visitor logs very recently after it became rumored (think I found this article at Huffington Post's webite) Cheney was a customer of Pamela Martin and Associates (D.C. Madam scandal) while he was Halliburton's CEO. Maybe he was a customer more recently...while Cheney has been Vice President? Regardless of when he might have been a customer or whether he was an intermittent or regular customer, this would put the VP in a position to be blackmailed. Importantly, an Administration with Conservative support in particular would not want the public to become aware if the VP was being visited by prostitutes.

There are so many scandals (I mentioned just a few.) swirling around VP Cheney that the odds are highest he's concealing his visitor records to obstruct justice in many criminal investigations, not just to conceal his relationship with Jack Abramoff!

not a customer

A recipient of services, perhaps, but not a paying customer. The tab would have been picked up by a "friend"- Brent or Sergei or Igor or whoever.
But maybe Cheney had none of this. He says he doesn't drink vodka. Perhaps this rumor is only that and nothing more.

On the other hand, if there is substance here, there will be witnesses and business records and Cheney is yesterday's turkey.

a lot to hide

we were given a glimpse of the soul of this administration at the confirmation hearing of Alberto Gonzales a year ago. At that hearing, Gonzales asserted the principle that the constitution did not "explicitly guarantee the right of habeas corpus". Gonzales quickly backed down from this assertion when he realized that he had overreached, but two things are certain: That this man, close confidant of Bush for years, was chosen by Bush as AG because Bush knew that Gonzales was prepared to go beyond the bounds of the law, and turn the DOJ into a political tool fit to the hand of GWB. Monica Goodling's work was one part of this scheme.

Secondly, Bush and Gonzales both knew that the Abramoff affair could unravel secrets that would get them impeached, if known. To prevent this, they were prepared to connive at the arbitrary imprisonment of people for political purposes and deny them habeas corpus. Persons imprisoned in such a fashion simply vanish, as the authorities do not have to admit to their arrest.

As this affair unravels, it will become clear how Bush and Gonzales intended to use their grip of the Justice Department to save themselves. The illegal surveillance and related activities, aspects of the Abramoff affair, and other aspects of corruption were all to be hushed up in this fashion, and illegal arrests and confinement would have "disappeared" embarrassing witnesses. It must be remembered that GWB still has a firm grip on Texas and many of the elected officials, including Sheriffs, etc., still do his bidding.
