US Attorneys scandal "will not be resolved during this administration"

The Bush team is playing out the clock.  They're forcing the battle with Congress over the U.S. Attorneys scandal into the courts -- and that means this issue will continue after January 20, 2009 when Bush leaves office.  Melanie Sloan explained as much to the NY Daily News -- and "senior Bush adviser" agreed with her (that hasn't happened very often):

Now the fight over whether Gonzales sacked nine federal prosecutors for not carrying out White House political objectives will probably be settled in court.

That likely means the clock will run out and Team Bush will win by default, experts said.

"This most likely will not be resolved during this administration," admitted Melanie Sloan, director of the liberal legal watchdog group Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington, which asked for a special prosecutor to investigate.

A senior Bush adviser agreed, saying of Gonzales: "He's limping, but he's still there and it's over."

CREW's efforts will linger and impact future administrations!

People should not forget that if the President and his men should lose in court and on appeal and still fail to cooperate with Congress that the President and his men could be charged with obstruction of justice and in contempt of court. Does the Administration really win if its members are facing jail time?

Furthermore, Bush's legacy will be no worse than it could be if he ends his presidency on such a sour note that continues well past his service! Most presidents want to leave a positive imprint in history. The White House's stonewalling means this administration hasn't a chance to end on an upbeat note! Today's stonewalling will haunt the Bush Administration for the rest of recorded history and already makes Watergate look like a misdemeanor in contrast!

Had it not been for CREW the matter of so many US Attorneys being fired for political reasons might never have been identified and investigated. Rarely do conflicts end ideally...we can't always have the outcome exactly as we please. It is better an investigation end after Bush has left office than for the investigation never to have commenced from the start and those engaging in crimes be permitted to get away with them. One reason to investigate/prosecute is to deter others from committing the same crime(s). CREW's drawing attention to the firing of US attorneys for possible political reasons has resulted in an investigation that doesn't just seek to punish those who are guilty, but to deter future administrations from committing the same crime. CREW's efforts will be far from awash!

Bush Will Not Win ...

Nothing is over. Yes, informed sources say that it may take more than 18 months to get this before the US Supreme Court; however, Senator Leahy has said that the fight will continue on until a legal conclusion is reached.

Most Americans believe a Democrat will prevail in 2008. This is far from over ...
