BREAKING: CREW files ethics complaint against Senator Larry Craig (R-ID)
Today, CREW filed a complaint with the Senate ethics committee against Senator Larry Craig (R-ID). We have asked for an investigation into whether the senator violated the Senate Rules of Conduct by engaging in disorderly conduct. A copy of the complaint can be found here.
As is widely known by now, yesterday, August 27, 2007, Roll Call revealed that on August 8th, Sen. Craig pleaded guilty to disorderly conduct charges stemming from his June arrest in a Minnesota airport men's restroom. Undercover officers were monitoring the restroom following complaints of sexual activity there. According to the police report:
Craig entered the restroom and sat in the stall next to [the undercover officer]. Craig began tapping his right foot, touched his right foot to the left foot of the officer and brushed his hand beneath the partition between them. He was then arrested.
As part of his guilty plea, Craig paid a fine of $500 and was placed on one year's probation.
The Senate Ethics Manual provides that certain conduct may be improper even though it does not violate specific Senate rules or regulations. Such conduct has been characterized as "improper conduct which may reflect upon the Senate." This rule is intended to protect the integrity and reputation of the Senate as a whole. The Ethics Manual explains that "improper conduct" is given meaning by considering "generally accepted standards of conduct, the letter and spirit of laws and Rules..."
Even though Sen. Craig has already been adjudicated guilty in a criminal court, the Senate may still discipline him for improper conduct as it has other members in the past.
Melanie Sloan, CREW's executive director, said:
The Senate Select Committee on Ethics should immediately commence an investigation into Sen. Craig's conduct. If pleading guilty to charges stemming from an attempt to solicit an undercover officer in a public restroom is not conduct that reflects poorly upon the Senate, what is?
Senator Barbara Boxer (D-CA), who chairs the Senate Ethics Committee, already declined to comment on this matter according to today's Washington Post:
Because Craig pleaded guilty to a crime, the incident may be reviewed by the Senate ethics committee. Its chairman, Sen. Barbara Boxer (D-Calif.), declined to comment last night.
Political Agenda
As I opine and research your site there seems to be a political slant to all your "investigations". I would like to know the Political Party of all your staff members. I know there must be more persons of the Democratic side that are just as corrupt. The above blog makes sense to me
Your agenda seems to be "Expose as many Republicans as possible" so as to get a completely Democratic government in 2008. How sad. If that happens costs of government will skyrocket!!
Political Agenda
It couldn't be that Republicans are committing more ethics violations than Democrats could it?
Duh...YES!!
But.......
You don't refute anything that is said here. Remember, the republicans paint themselves as the party of ethics and the moral high ground. When you are on high ground, you make a louder sound when you fall. If CREW is wrong about this guy, let'em know. But could they be wrong? His plea was guilty!
Opine and Research
The charge that CREW favors Democrats has been made before. It is true that there are more Republicans than Democrats on the CREW Most Corrupt List. I don’t believe it is partisanship, however, but simply a matter of certain Republicans making hay in the sunshine.
If Republicans really believe that the work of CREW ignores corrupt Democrats then why don’t you go after these yourself? Lord knows you have the money. Start your own CREW-type organization and have at. You can name it something like BAWRP ( Boy Are We Republicans Pissed).
If you expose corrupt Democrats, the whole nation will applaud you, including this confirmed independent (myself). Thank you for this opportunity to reply.
what?
Why cant there truly be someone or some group that really cares about ethics. This site has some serious problems with being honest about ethics in washington..corruption is everywhere, and every party. How can you claim that you care about ethics when on your long list of concerns there is no mention of Mr.Jeffersons' windfall of 90,000 dollars found in his frezzer. He used the rescue efforts during Katrina so has to get to his freezer and get it! What is ethicaly wrong with you!.And, I'm sure your list could include many more politicians. When ethics are weighed for political slants are you not also part of the problem you're investigating. You should be ashamed of yourself for false motivations..
