No vote today. House Ethics bill "hit a solid wall of opposition."

Yesterday, CREW sent a letter to all members of the House of Representatives urging them to support H.R. 4239, establishing a House ethics commission, rather than H. Res. 895, the resolution proposed by the Democratic members of the Special Ethics Task Force.   The letter can be found here.  The vote on H. Res. 895 was scheduled for today.  However, according to the Washington Post, the vote has now been delayed:

House Democrats abruptly pulled an ethics reform proposal from consideration yesterday after widespread opposition surfaced from lawmakers on both sides of the aisle a day before a scheduled vote on the plan.

According to the Post, the new ethics office "hit a solid wall of opposition."  Amazing.   In CREW's view, the new proposal didn't go far enough.  The Special Ethics Task Force admirably has worked to create a process to improve ethics enforcement in the House of Representatives.  But, the Task Force resolution is missing two critical elements -- the new Office of Congressional Ethics proposed by the Task Force would not have subpoena power and would not accept complaints from outsiders.

But, even that is too much for the House.  Despite all the rhetoric about ethics reform on both sides of the aisle,  members just will not police themselves.
