Senator Vitter: "there is an enormous difference" between Spitzer's case and mine
Well, both cases involving prostitution. One key difference between Spitzer and Vitter is that Vitter is still holding public office:
Sen. David Vitter, R-La., has been mostly mum on the prostitution scandal that forced Democratic New York Gov. Eliot Spitzer to announce his resignation last week. But Vitter let down his guard a bit in a conference call with constituents. Scott Jordan, editor of the Independent Weekly of Lafayette, said he was able to ask Vitter whether he would resign after his phone number was connected last year to a Washington, D.C., escort service that federal investigators say was a call-girl operation. "I have made a very serious mistake a long time ago and I have to live with that every day," Vitter said, according to Jordan's account. "That's not a flippant statement. I need to spend my whole life making up for that." According to Jordan, Vitter turned "a bit defiant" and added: "Anybody who looks at the two cases will see there is an enormous difference between the two of them. The people that are trying to draw comparisons to the two cases are people who've never agreed with me on important issues like immigration and other things."
Last July, CREW filed a Senate Ethics Complaint against Sen. Vitter. We're still waiting for action on that.
Last week, the National Republican Congressional Committee called on Democrats to return contributions from Gov. Spitzer, but no similar call has been made for Republicans to return contributions from Sen. Vitter. Here's a link to a list of those campaigns that have received campaign contributions from Sen. Vitter.
Actually, there IS a difference...
Let me preface this statement by saying I'm a democrat, an Obama supporter, and I don't care about who politicians have sex with (male or female, diapered on not), HOWEVER...
Vitter wasn't PROSECUTING ordinary people for doing the same thing he was up to in private and Spitzer was. This is classic and hypocritical abuse of power, in my opinion.
I live in NY, supported him for Gov. but if this is the crap he's all about, good riddance. The Democrats need assholes like him like they need a hole in the head.
No, there's not
David Vitter is a bible-thumping conservative of the family-values sect of the Republican party. He is quite quick and eager to condemn those who do not share his twisted version of Christianity. He needs to practice what he preaches, stop being a coward, and face up to his indiscretions; if not for himself, then to represent the honor a US Senator should portray.
No excuses for either, they both stunk up the place!
Notsomuch
Vitter may not be prosecuting... but he certainly was legislating morality -- be it through anti-gay marriage initiatives, anti-choice votes and basically standing in stone-casting judgement over all those sinners less moral than he...
...until he was caught whoring. In diapers. Then it became something else entirely, right?
Not all that different, no.
...not an "enormous difference"
Well, I agree it's kind of an exaggeration on Vitter's part to say there is an "enormous" difference between the two cases, but at least he wasn't actively shutting down prostitution rings and crowing about it in press conferences. His political profile has never been that of "moral crusader" but rather a run-of-the-mill bible belt pandering pol.
Also, while I agree there is a delicious sort of schadenfreud to the Vitter-in-Diapers scenario, he wasn't taking a public position in regards to prostitution as was Spitzer. So in that way (for me) Spitzer is worse and much more of a disappointment.
And just one more point, then I'll shut up: I think it is up to thinking people and conscientious citizens to be intellectually honest about the failings of these politicians and call them on it rather than accept bad behavior (and even DEFEND it) from someone on the "same team."
Actually, there is NOT a difference
So, does that mean that I can rob a bank as long as I'm not famous for prosecuting bank robbers?. It's sad that a liberal would do something as stupid as to imply(or to be fair, seem to imply) that Vitter doesn't have to resign because he wasn't a notorious opponent of prostitution.
Both Spitzer and Vitter need to be out of government. The former for being a self-righteous, hypocritical jackass and the latter for being a self-righteous, hypocritical, fundamentalist imbecile.
Oh right, they also BROKE THE LAW. Whether or not it's a stupid, impractical law is debatable, but it's still the law.
This is what Gov. Spitzer should have done.
He should have reisigned from the Democratic party. Re-registered as a Republican and stated that he is implementing the Vitter/Craig clause that it is not illegal if you are a republican. Then waited a few month and come back as a Democrat.
Or also could do
Spitzer could also take his lumps this term, and if Patterson or the next Dem gubernatorial candidate loses the next election, Spitzer could offer himself again for the governor's seat. After all, for getting himself caught with his hands in the wrong pantsuit, he had to resign. But nowhere does it say that this is permanent. If a Repub holds the office, next election Spitzer could, and possibly should run again. Lotsa US politicians beg forgiveness of the electorate, and then get their old jobs back. And wouldn't Wall Street have a conniption fit were he to do so?
Not so Christian values
It remind me of the Christian values that many in the Republican Party (the conservative Christian right part) upholds so strongly when they go on the attack against others. I wonder how they are doing on keeping those Commandments. I had a look at those Commandments that focus on person-to-person relationships and are meant to guide interaction between people. Unfortunately, they tend to break them willfully day in and day out. Yes, theft, lies, adultery, want and murder. Christian Values...
...Make a good offensive weapon.
For Konservatives and GOPers though,
they are nothing to actually LIVE by.
Not a moral guide----Just a weapon.
Is this as Jesus intended?
Probably not.
But St. PAUL did.
vast justice dept conspiracy?
http://www.gregpalast.com/elliot-spitzer-gets-nailed/
whoa. just whoa.
nailed
Palast makes the most sense to me, and I read the original E. Spitzer oped piece before this, and arrived at that conclusion. DOJ had this info for 8-9 months, and chose now to release it.
This does not absolve E.S., nor does comparing him to Vitter. Too much like Repubs saying, "well, Bill did it too"..
Since Spitzer was probably the one man in America who could have had a real impact on our crumbling economy, and done something important, meaningful for the average American, having spoiled that chance, I despise his selfishness even more.
freepatriot
"The people that are trying to draw comparisons to the two cases are people who've never agreed with me on important issues"
he shoulda added something like this:
and the people who agree with me on those issues are willing to suspend their moral principals and support me on this, even though they are the same people who insisted that Eliot Spitzer resign, cuz they don't suspend their moral values for Democrats
Liberal Media Bias
The difference is Republicans and conservatives are not held to the same standard as Dems and progressives are.
Gosh darned that librul media bias. Allowing a Republican john to stay in office while forcing out a Democratic john...
...oh wait.
Vitter's difference
The key difference is probably about $4,000.
you took the words out of my mouth
tho i think the difference was probably closer to $5K. (Vitter claims to be a fiscal conservative, and i'll take him at his word...and it's well known that GOP johns don't like to spoil the working girls.)
Senate vs Gub
Vitter replace would be appointed by Dem govenor, and therefore has the support of his own party. Spitzer was replaced with another Dem, meaning he did not have the support of his own party. Otherwise, I don't see a difference.
Jindal is a Repub
Vitter, if he resigned, would be replaced by Gov. Bobby Jindal, who is a Republican.
But when he got caught
The Gov was a Dem, and so would have been replaced by a Dem.
the difference is obvious
Vitter is a Republican and Spitzer is a Democrat.
It really is as simple as that.
Yessss Please Elucidate
Tell us how the enormous difference is because? You're a good Christian and Spitzers a bad Democrat? Your wore protective diapers and he didn't? He paid of for high-end call girls and you used common American whores? Am I getting close? Maybe you could go into detail how your whoring was OK and his wasn't.
it is the evidence at hand
The Feds have Spitzer over a barrel, they have cellphone calls, text messages, wire transfers. Spitzer is pretty much cornered, and the Feds and Spitzer knows it. Spitzer has to make a plea deal, he would be toast if he goes to trial.
Vitter may have done the same thing as Spitzer, but the Feds have only circumstantial evidence against Vitter, ie phone records. A case against Vitter would be much more difficult to get a conviction.. Vitter's defense could be he was calling for something else, or technically he didn't make a solicitation on the phone but more of an inquiry and decline to pay for a prostitute. However, if the Feds wanted to open an investigation on Vitter for some of the same things as Spitzer is in big trouble for, structuring and money laundering, besides possible tax evasion. The Feds could probably hit pay dirt.
I wouldn't consider this a partisan issue in the sense, Spitzer was playing an incredibly reckless game. If Hillary won the presidential election, Spitzer would had been on the short list as potential Attorney Generals, it is better he was caught now than later.
The only thing that is partisan issue is that the IRS or DOJ could seriously investigate Vitter for any financial irregularities connected to his use of prostitutes. Given he has admitted in public about them, and I don't know what is the statue of limitations for any financial crimes like laundering, structuring and tax evasion.
difference?
You broke a commandment, he broke a commandment, you dishonored your wife, family and constituents, he dishonored his wife, family and constituents, you didn't have the cojones to step down, he did. Only one difference I can see as a major outsider, he like to play around with unsafe sex which really could be a death sentence for his wife. I don't know about you. Did you like to live on the edge too??
One other difference...
....as far as we know, Spitzer never got dressed up in diapers while using prostitutes. But I'm not sure Vitter wins by bringing up that point....
oh nooooo
please please please tell me this isn't about dick length
RE: oh noooo
Yes, it's about dick length. Vitter is the bigger dick.

harv
sounds as though Sen. Vitter is getting pampered on this issue.
