McCain should release his wife's tax returns, not doing so "smacks of hypocrisy".

Today, John McCain released his tax returns.  However, McCain did not release the forms for his wife, Cindy, who files separately.  CREW's Melanie Sloan thinks that presents a problem for McCain:

The Associated Press estimated this month that Cindy McCain is worth over $100 million based on the value of her late father's stake in Hensley & Co.

In 2004, Democratic presidential nominee John Kerry disclosed a portion of the tax returns of his wife, Teresa Heinz Kerry, heir to a $500 million fortune, three weeks before the election.

Hazelbaker said Cindy McCain's situation differs from Teresa Heinz Kerry because Kerry had loaned money to her husband's campaign and Cindy McCain hasn't done so.

Melanie Sloan, executive director of the watchdog group Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington, said the failure to release Cindy McCain's returns shouldn't fly with voters because transparency has been ``a signature issue for John McCain,'' and not releasing her information smacks of hypocrisy.

``He should just release the tax returns and make it a non- issue,'' Sloan said.

McCain Tax Returns

Wow a guy who donated a quarter of his income to charity last year. Sounds really generous doesnt it? Problem is that the money went to the John and Cindy McCain Foundation. If you look at the tax returns for the McCain Foundation for the last seven years you find $500,000 in donations to:

Xavier College Preparatory
Brophy College Prep
Christ Lutheran School

What do these private schools have in common?
Why they are all private schools that his children attend or have attended.
The Senator is taking tax breaks supporting elite private schools for his kids.
All Perfectly Legal but….

Cindy McCain

I have to disagree. Presidential candidates are not required to release their tax information. The fact that they do should be welcomed and accepted as the generous act that it is. In the rare case where the spouse files separately, and they are not financially backing a campaign, their tax information should not be expected nor demanded to be released since they are not running for office. To claim that it "smacks of hypocrisy" is silly and petty, again, because it is not a requirement for running for office.

CREW's disclosures

I find it totally hypocritical that CREW demands disclosure when they themselves don't disclose where their funding comes from. To me they are the extension of Democratic Party hacks who point fingers at others and don't practice what they preach. To say that Mrs. McCain WILL disclose is pure BS and wishful thinking. Ms. Sloan is an attorney & dammit she knows better but has an agenda that is anti-McCain. I hope Ms. McCain spits in her eye and John is elected President. I also hope Ms. Sloan finds a real target like, say, the Clintons who are one of the more corrupt political figures that are alive. Have at THEM, CREW!
