6 Jan 2009 // MARION - Contractors are busy in Marion these days, working on making the FEMA mobile homes better suited for the cold.
When the units were delivered, it was the middle of a hot and humid summer.
"Right now we're just doing some insulation under the unit cause they didn't expect the cold either, or it to be this cold," said Dennis Evans, a contractor.
With the cold came frozen water pipes. Since mobile homes are mobile, the water pipes underneath are exposed to the elements.
FEMA contractors already came to fix Dean Hanover's home after the pipes froze a few weeks ago.
"We called FEMA at 4:50 a.m. and within two hours they were out here, they had it all solved and that's the last problem we had," said Hanover.
Hanover said the workers wrapped his pipes and added an electrical strip of heat tape.
He said he's been impressed with FEMA so far since the flood. But Hanover said he doesn't understand insulating anything more than just the pipes.
"I think really it's a waste of money as far as tax payers money," said Hanover.
KCRG-TV9 tried to contact FEMA to ask about the insulation, but no one was available because Friday is a federal holiday. And the contractors here can't comment about the situation.
FEMA has said they are trying to prevent future issues with the weather.
Hanover said he appreciates the effort.
