House passes new Ethics rules

Today, in their first official act, newly sworn in members of the 110th Congress adopted new stringent ethics rules. There were two votes on H.Res.6. Title I passed by a margin of 426 - 0. Title II passed with a vote of 430 - 1. The one no vote was Rep. Dan Burton (R-IN).

Earlier today, CREW issued a statement calling the new ethics package proposed by the Democratic leadership "as a positive first step" and a "promising move toward a cleaner Congress." Melanie Sloan also noted that enforcement is the key to ethics -- Congress needs an Office of Public Integrity.
