Under Investigation by: The FBI, the IRS, Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE), the Miami-Dade State Attorney’s Office (MDSA), and the Miami-Dade Police Department (MDPD).
Under Investigation for: The FBI and the IRS are looking at whether a family company compensated Rep. Rivera for leading a pro-slots campaign for a dog track during his time in the state legislature. The investigation by the FDLE, MDSA and MDPD is probing, in addition to the slots campaign, Rep. Rivera’s relationship with a former lobbyist who received large payments from the Miami-Dade GOP while Rep. Rivera chaired the organization; and his use of campaign funds. Additionally, the FEC was investigating Rep. Rivera for potentially violating campaign finance laws by coordinating campaign activities with an independent political organization.
Status: On January 19, 2011, the Miami Herald reported that the Florida Department of Law Enforcement has taken over as the lead state agency investigating Rep. Rivera, with the continued cooperation of the Miami-Dade Police Department and the Miami-Dade State Attorney’s office. On April 20, 2011, the FEC informed Rep. Rivera he is no longer under investigation for potentially violating campaign finance laws by coordinating campaign activities with an independent political organization. On July 21, 2011, the Miami Herald reported that the FBI and IRS had opened an investigation into slots campaign and had begun interviewing witnesses.
