Under Investigation for: According to news sources, a federal grand jury is investigating several politicians from Queens, NY, including Rep. Meeks. The National Legal and Policy Center filed a complaint accusing Rep. Meeks of receiving a sweetheart deal on a home he built in Queens, and he failed to report several loans connected with the house on his financial disclosure forms. Specifically, Rep. Meeks failed to report a $40,000 loan he received from a personal friend in 2007, and received a $59,650 loan in 2010 to pay for the earlier loan. The Daily News reported that the grand jury subpoenaed documents related to Rep. Meeks house. Rep. Meeks also failed to reveal some of his wife’s sources of income on his personal financial disclosure forms.

Status: On April 13, 2010, Rep. Meeks announced on the House floor that he had been subpoenaed by a federal grand jury. On May 18, 2011, the OCE referred its investigation of Rep. Meeks to the House Ethics Committee. On August 1, 2011, the House Ethics Committee dismissed allegations of impropriety surrounding the 2010 loan, but voted to continue its investigation of the 2007 loan.
