CREW: Rangel Must Not Be The Last
For the first time in 27 years, the House of Representatives has censured one of its own. Today, Rep. Charles Rangel (D-NY) became the first member of Congress to be formally censured by the House for ethics violations since 1983. In response, Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington (CREW) Executive Director Melanie Sloan issued the following statement:
"Today, the House took appropriate action in sanctioning Rep. Rangel for his egregious conduct. While the censure vote closes the book on the Rangel matter, the issue of ethics enforcement remains very much alive. In the 111th Congress, the ethics process was revitalized by the creation of the Office of Congressional Ethics, but the office's future is far from secure. Members of both parties should renew their commitment to ethical leadership by preserving - if not strengthening - the ethics office. An ongoing, vigorous OCE is the best way to ensure that it won't be another 27 years before any other member of the House is similarly held accountable for misconduct."
