CREW Recruits Brock as New Chair
Washington, DC – Progressive activist David Brock has been named Chairman of the Board of Directors of Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington (CREW), a leading public ethics watchdog group, the group announced today. The move is effective August 11.
Brock is the founder of the progressive media watchdog, Media Matters for America, the Democratic research Super PAC American Bridge and The American Independent Institute, which supports journalism that exposes the nexus of conservative power in Washington.
“With public confidence in the institutions of government at an all-time-low, the need for a robust accountability campaign on behalf of the public has never been more urgent,” Brock said. “Democracy requires honest government.”
The current board chairman, Louis Mayberg, will remain a CREW director.
The CREW board also named two new directors in addition to Brock: San Francisco- based real-estate investor and philanthropist Wayne Jordan and longtime DC strategic consultant David Mercer.
Melanie Sloan, the group’s founding executive director, informed the board of her intention to step down to pursue new opportunities. Sloan will stay on in her position until a replacement is found.
“I look forward to working with Melanie during this leadership transition that will preserve the vitality of CREW’s important mission of ensuring the highest ethical standards, accountability, and transparency in government," Brock said. “Under Melanie’s leadership, CREW emerged as an effective voice for the kind of honesty and integrity we deserve in our public officials. We will build on her record of success, expanding the portfolio to scrutinize more activity in states, and political organizations that wield just as much influence over our policies as our politicians do, if not more.”
Sloan said, “By holding those in power accountable for their actions, CREW has served as a critical watchdog and an important voice for ordinary citizens who believe Washington can do better. Given David’s track record of building high-impact sustainable institutions, I am confident that CREW will continue to thrive under this new governance.”
