FEC Ignores the Law Again

Today, the Federal Election Commission (FEC) dismissed a complaint filed by Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington (CREW) against democratic Congressional candidate Brian Doyle.  Mr Doyle ran unsuccessfully for the House of Representatives in South Carolina's Third Congressional District, a race eventually won by Representative-elect Jeff Duncan (R-SC).  CREW alleged that Mr. Doyle and his campaign committee violated federal election law by failing to file the April 15th Quarterly Report and 12-Day Pre-Primary Reports when they were due.  In response to the news, CREW Executive Director Melanie Sloan issued the following statement:

"Apparently the FEC is the only place in America where ignorance of the law is a legitimate excuse.  The FEC's position here is nothing short of baffling.  According to the commissioners, as long as you don't understand the legal requirements surrounding running for office, you won't be held responsible for violating them.  This is yet another example of how the FEC has become a toothless joke."
