FOIA StacksFollowing up on revelations that Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Administrator Lisa Jackson used at least one “alias” email account not readily identifiable as that of the administrator, CREW sent Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests to nine agencies – including the Departments of Homeland Security, Education, Energy, Housing and Urban Development, Interior, Justice, State, Treasury, and Defense – asking for records that would show whether their agency heads also use alias email accounts.

As CREW explained in its requests, the requested information will reveal how widespread this practice is in order to evaluate the extent to which it has led to under-inclusive responses to FOIA, congressional, and discovery requests, and a failure to preserve records in a way that complies with the Federal Records Act.
