Michael Cohen’s plea doesn’t seem surprising, but it is worth taking a step back to consider it nonetheless.

President Donald Trump’s longtime personal lawyer has admitted to criminal fraud and is likely facing several years in prison. This level of criminal wrongdoing in such proximity to a sitting president is alarming in itself. Could the president really have known nothing about it? Was there other criminal activity also swirling in his orbit for years? That question is, of course, only underlined by the conviction on eight counts of the president’s former campaign chairman, Paul Manafort, virtually simultaneously with the Cohen plea.
