Washington, D.C. – In response to the House Ethics Committee’s announcement that renowned defense lawyer Billy Martin has been retained as outside counsel to complete the investigation into Rep. Maxine Waters (D-CA) Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington (CREW) Executive Director Melanie Sloan issued the following statement:
“While CREW has been a frequent and vocal critic of Rep. Waters, recent information suggests the ethics committee’s investigation was deeply flawed. CREW welcomes Mr. Martin’s appointment to ensure Rep. Waters has the benefit – as all members accused of misconduct should – of a thorough and fair investigative process.
More importantly, I am pleased to see Mr. Martin also will be investigating the committee itself. Recent reports paint the committee as nearly decimated by partisanship and pettiness, dramatically undermining confidence in its work. To ensure the committee handles the Waters investigation appropriately from here on out, Mr. Martin’s findings regarding the committee should be released publicly before any further action is taken in the Waters case.”
