Washington – Following the guilty plea of Congressman Duncan Hunter, Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington (CREW) Executive Director Noah Bookbinder released the following statement:

“Congressman Hunter has shown a blatant disregard for the law and engaged in one of the most egregious Congressional spending scandals we have ever seen. When CREW filed multiple complaints against Hunter for spending campaign funds for personal use in 2016, he dismissed it–and the investigation that followed–as a witch hunt. His admission of guilt in federal court today shows that he will finally be forced to face the consequences of his actions and deceit. With a criminal conviction on his record for misusing campaign funds, there is no quarter for Hunter in Congress. He must resign immediately.

The conviction is a clear message that you cannot abuse your campaign for your own personal benefit. Following CREW’s complaints, the Office of Congressional Ethics voted unanimously for an investigation, which the House Ethics Committee deferred until after the completion of the criminal investigation into Hunter. With Hunter’s guilty plea, that investigation is now over. Until he leaves the House, the Ethics Committee has jurisdiction to investigate. It is time they did.”
