Announcement Date: January 11, 2018

Seventeen democratic members of the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform—including Ranking Member Elijah E. Cummings (D-MD)— submitted a request to Committee Chairman Trey Gowdy (R-SC) for an investigation into President Trump’s adherence to the Constitution’s emoluments clause. The democratic members requested that Chairman Gowdy use his subpoena power to obtain documents detailing how the Trump Organization identifies payments from foreign governments, how it calculates related profits to be donated to the United States Department of Treasury, and whether it plans to claim them as tax deductions.
