Following multiple reports of misconduct by Senior Counsel to the Assistant Attorney General for Civil Rights Leo Terrell, including multiple apparent Hatch Act violations, CREW President Donald K. Sherman released the following statement:

“Leo Terrell has repeatedly used his position as he sees fit, without any apparent regard for the law. His repeated use of official resources and channels to boost his preferred political candidates, including his reported plans for a government-funded awareness tour featuring midterm election candidates, is egregious and blatantly unethical behavior that the Hatch Act explicitly forbids. He has also reportedly pursued federal investigations and lawsuits against academic institutions despite insufficient evidence. It’s deeply troubling that a senior official who serves at the agency tasked with upholding the rule of law is acting as though the law doesn’t exist. The recent reports of Terrell’s alleged bullying and other misconduct demonstrate that he views his position as an opportunity to exercise power, not serve the public. He must resign.”
