The Senate Ethics Committee should investigate whether Sen. Marco Rubio violated Senate rules by converting campaign funds to personal funds, Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington (CREW) requested in a complaint filed today.  News reports allege Sen. Rubio used donations to his leadership PAC to pay a writer to help write his memoir, which netted Rubio an $800,000 advance.

In 2012, Rubio’s Reclaim America PAC paid Mark Salter $20,000, purportedly for “strategic consulting.”  According to a news report, that $20,000 was “for help writing a memoir.” In his 2012 memoir An American Son, Rubio wrote that he was “grateful to Mark Salter for helping [him] organize and revise the manuscript on a tight schedule.”  Salter previously coauthored numerous books with Sen. John McCain.
