Two CREW staffers testified before Congress about crucial democracy reform issues as part of early hearings on H.R. 1, the For the People Act.

On February 6, 2019, CREW Senior Advisor Walter Shaub testified in front of the Committee on Oversight and Reform in support of stronger executive branch ethics laws. He noted in his testimony that “OGE possesses only the soft power that comes from the ability of its Director to persuade or shame officials into doing the right thing,” and that OGE needs stronger enforcement authority to hold the President and executive branch to a high standard.

On February 7, 2019, CREW Executive Director Noah Bookbinder testified in front of the oversight subcommittee of the Committee on Ways and Means about proposals to require the disclosure of presidential tax returns. He testified about the many things that could be learned by examining President Trump’s tax returns, like whether he paid his fair share of taxes or how he approached charitable donations.
