CREW statement on attempted Weintraub firing
Following President Trump’s attempted firing of Federal Election Commission Chair Ellen Weintraub, CREW Executive Director and Chief Counsel Donald K. Sherman released the following statement:
“Commissioner Weintraub’s decades-long tenure as leader of the Federal Election Commission is remarkable for her strong stands against corruption and even-handed application of the law—so it is no surprise that Donald Trump is unlawfully trying to fire her. Far from bowing to Trump’s demands for loyalty, Weintraub voted to subject him to the law like any other politician and did so in the face of an obstinate bloc of colleagues across the aisle. Trump’s attempt to fire her contradicts the law, as well as the spirit of the bipartisan commission. If it were to succeed, it would permit the most corrupt president in history to unilaterally hobble an independent agency and invite more illegal influence in American elections.”
