Following the announcement that Rep. Tony Gonzales would not seek reelection to the House of Representatives, Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington President Donald K. Sherman, a former House Ethics Committee counsel, released the following statement:

“This isn’t good enough. Rep. Gonzales has admitted to having a sexual relationship with a staffer, a violation of House rules that are there to ensure a safe working environment for House staff. This is not the kind of thing you get to do and then keep your job for another year. It is both an insult to the people that House rules are meant to protect and a showing of moral cowardice to say that while you believe what he did was horrifying and a clear violation of rules, you need his vote on legislation, so he should stay in office until the end of the term. Gonzales should resign immediately.”
