Washington – Counselor to the President Kellyanne Conway violated the Hatch Act yet again. This time, she did so in interviews on Fox News on August 12 and August 13, in her official capacity and on White House grounds, in which she discussed government business but also attacked the presumptive Democratic nominees for president and vice president, Joe Biden and Kamala Harris.
This is nothing new for Conway, the most egregious violator of the Hatch Act in American history. After the Office of Special Counsel (OSC) took the unprecedented step of recommending that Conway be removed from federal service due to near non-stop violations of the Hatch Act, the Trump administration turned a blind eye, and her violations have just increased in frequency.
The Hatch Act is meant to deter the use of government resources and positions for partisan political means. The Trump administration’s decision not to enforce penalties for repeated violations of the Hatch Act was just a preview of where we would find ourselves today, with a president who plans on holding his nominating convention in government buildings, and is working to dismantle the postal service in order to ensure his reelection.
When it comes to Kellyanne Conway, nothing is new here. She broke ethics law in the way she has before, over and over again. So today, CREW filed a complaint with OSC, because we will never stop fighting for an ethical government, even if those words seem contradictory with this president.
