Former Office of Government Ethics (OGE) Director Walter Shaub today joins Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington (CREW) as Senior Advisor. Widely recognized as one of the nation’s leading experts on government ethics, Shaub joins CREW’s Chief Ethics Counsel Virginia Canter to form an ethics program like no other.

“I’ve been an admirer of CREW’s work, and now I’m excited to be a part of it,” Shaub said. “At a time when the ethical norms that make up our democracy find themselves under constant attack, CREW is doing essential work to protect them.”

As head of OGE, Shaub ran the independent agency responsible for overseeing ethics policies for the executive branch of the federal government; in the early days of the Trump administration, he pushed publicly for the new administration to follow ethics rules and best practices, and upon his departure actively decried their frequent failure to do so. Prior to leading OGE, Shaub served in the Department of Veterans Affairs and Department of Health and Human Services, as well as holding multiple positions in OGE. His previous role was as Senior Director, Ethics at the Campaign Legal Center.

“The unprecedented ethical failures of the Trump administration have us working day and night,” CREW Executive Director Noah Bookbinder said. “With Walt Shaub joining Virginia Canter, we are in a better position than ever to fight back on ethics issues.”

“I rejoined CREW as Chair because I knew of no better way to fight against corruption and for ethical government in Washington,” CREW Board Chair Norman Eisen said. “Adding Walt Shaub only makes our great ethics team even better; we’re so glad to have him joining our battle for accountability.”
