Washington- Following the unprecedented vote to not call witnesses or obtain new evidence in the impeachment trial of President Trump, Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington (CREW) Executive Director Noah Bookbinder released the following statement:

“For the first time in American history, the Senate voted to move forward to an impeachment verdict without calling a single witness or obtaining any new evidence. Multiple senators acknowledged President Trump’s guilt, yet still voted to move forward without hearing from key witnesses, or any witnesses, and announced their plan to vote to acquit him. This is a dereliction of duty and an abdication of constitutional responsibilities. 51 senators voted to create a dangerous and embarrassing partisan precedent that will limit the functioning of our system of checks and balances going forward. They all took an oath to support and defend the Constitution. Today they failed.”
