CREW requests records from the Hungarian government on Trump and Hungarian officials
CREW is requesting records from eight different agencies in the Hungarian government related to visits by Hungarian government officials to the U.S. and vice versa, communication between the staff of the two governments related to those trips and materials related to the development of a potential Trump property in Hungary. This record request, which is submitted pursuant to Hungary’s Right to Informational Self-Determination and Freedom of Information Act, will shed light on potential conflicts of interest that the Trump administration has engaged in with the Hungarian government.
CREW requested records from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs related to former Prime Minister Viktor Orbán’s 2019 and 2025 visits to the United States, where he visited the White House and Mar-a-Lago, possible financial transactions between the U.S. and Hungarian governments, documents related to visits by Trump business affiliates to Hungary, documents related to the award of Hungary’s Order of Merit to Jared Kushner and materials referencing the “Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC).” The public deserves to know about potential conflicts of interest with foreign governments and officials, and whether President Trump used the presidency to promote his personal property and business interests.
CREW also sent requests to the Ministry of Finance and the State Treasury requesting information on payments made from the government of Hungary to properties owned by President Trump, the Trump Organization or his family members in the last decades. These requests also included a request for information on possible purchases by Hungarian government officials of cryptocurrencies that are operated and/or affiliated with President Trump, including the “$TRUMP” coin and other such products. The possibility of foreign governments currying favor and wielding influence by investing in Trump’s products is a serious conflict of interest that must be investigated.
Finally, CREW requested documents, planning materials, communications and other materials from the Ministries of Construction and Investment, Construction and Transport, Transportation and Investment and the Trade Licensing Office related to the development of a potential Trump property in Budapest and materials referencing Jared Kushner and the development of the “Grand Budapest” project. The number of Trump’s foreign real estate projects has skyrocketed during his second term, and the public deserves to know the details of such developments.
The requested records will shed more light on the potential conflicts of interest arising from Trump and his family’s business empire and investments from foreign governments.
