Donald Trump’s claim that he sent “Sent in the FBI” to prevent Governor Ron DeSantis from losing the 2018 gubernatorial race due to “voter fraud” would mean, if true, that he used government resources to attempt to sway a race in favor of a political ally. Trump has repeatedly advanced false claims of election fraud and during his time in office, he weaponized the federal government to benefit his allies and attack his enemies. If Trump used federal law enforcement resources or officials to interfere in the 2018 gubernatorial election, it would be a troubling new instance of Trump’s disregard for democracy and the integrity of the justice system.
CREW is suing the DOJ for records on these claims, after the department failed to provide records in response to a previous request.
Trump’s baseless “stolen” election conspiracy theories continue to pose a serious threat to our democracy and led to the January 6th insurrection. If he actually used the FBI to benefit a political ally, then the public needs to know.
