CREW filed a complaint against Department of Housing and Urban Development Regional Administrator Lynne Patton for violating the Hatch Act. Patton apparently violated the law by displaying Trump campaign merchandise in her government office, as seen in photos published in a New York magazine profile of Patton.
The Hatch Act prohibits executive branch employees from using their influence to interfere with or impact the results of an election. The Office of the Special Counsel, which enforces the Hatch Act, released guidelines stating that employees may not display any materials from the Trump campaign (as Patton did by displaying the red Trump campaign “USA” hat).
This is not the first time Patton has apparently violated the Hatch Act. CREW also filed a complaint against Patton for using her official HUD Twitter account to “like” partisan tweets, including from the Republican National Convention and President Trump.
